THE NEW NORMAL.  POOR FIRST-CLASS MAIL SERVICE

Hey!  First-Class letter service got better last week.  78.6% of First-Class letters were delivered on time, as opposed to 77.7% last week.   Only 7.19% of First-Class letters were more than 5 days late, down from 7.78% last week.  Huh?  What’s that?  Oh, you’re right – that is still terrible.  Terrible is the new normal.

For some real context, in the same week in 2023, 94.0% of First-Class letters were on time.  It took 2.89 days for a FC letter to be delivered – today they have added more than a full day.  Heck, First-Class flats were on time 79% of the time last year in this week, and we complained it was a bad week for flats.  Our 2024 YTD average on-time percentage for FC flats is 70.6%.   79% would be a treat.

Marketing Mail remains strong, thank goodness, with both letters and flats better than 96% on time.   Our customers are glad they are getting good service on their Marketing Mail, but nervous.  What’s going to break next?
